Introducing Automated Buybacks

A set of flexible primitives for building, governing, and executing buyback programs onchain.

Introducing Automated Buybacks

Buybacks are a core part of protocol economics, how they are structured and executed increasingly matters. Most projects have relied on some degree of discretion, requiring tokenholders to trust a team or foundation to follow through on its promises, while raising regulatory questions about reliance on centralized parties.

Today, we’re introducing Automated Buybacks, a set of flexible primitives for building, governing, and executing buyback programs onchain. Route protocol revenue into recurring or conditional purchases, configure how trades execute, and determine what happens to purchased tokens. The policy can remain under tokenholder governance or operate under immutable rules, while execution runs automatically and verifiably onchain.

The industry is increasingly turning to automation, giving tokenholders greater certainty while reducing reliance on centralized intermediaries, a distinction that is becoming increasingly relevant in the regulatory treatment of crypto systems.

How It Works

Automated Buybacks are configured around your protocol’s revenue, token design, and governance process. Define the policy upfront, then let execution run according to those rules.

1. Define and govern the policy

Set the budget, cadence, trading venue, execution limits, and destination for bought-back tokens. The policy can be updated through the protocol’s chosen governance process, while execution follows the configured rules.

2. Direct Revenue

Route a deterministic share of protocol revenue or treasury assets into a dedicated account for the buyback program. Funds remain in a governed vault until they are deployed according to the policy.

3. Configure and automate execution

Execute buybacks in small, recurring transactions according to the configured policy, reducing manual intervention while limiting execution risk, MEV susceptibility, and slippage.

Configure the execution route through supported venues such as CoW Swap, Uniswap, and other DEX integrations.

4. Route tokens and show the results

Define what happens to bought-back tokens based on your token design: burn, hold, distribute to tokenholders, deploy into protocol-owned liquidity, or configure a custom combination.

Track allocated capital, execution history, total tokens bought, and final token routing through a public dashboard.

Why Automate Buybacks?

Automation turns a buyback from a series of discretionary decisions into a transparent policy with verifiable execution.

More certainty. The rules governing the program are established in advance rather than determined transaction by transaction.

More predictability. Tokenholders can understand when and under what conditions protocol capital will be deployed.

Verifiable execution. The policy, capital flows, purchases, and resulting token movements can be verified onchain.

Less reliance on intermediaries. Individual purchases don’t depend on a team deciding whether, when, or how to execute them.

No central party required. Buyback rules can be set through governance or made immutable, while smart contracts handle ongoing execution without relying on a team, foundation, or other centralized intermediary.

This distinction is also becoming increasingly relevant in the regulatory treatment of crypto systems. Recent guidance has highlighted whether a functional crypto system relies on a central party when considering the significance of an issuer’s commitment to conduct token buybacks.

Automating execution does not determine whether a system is decentralized. But it gives protocols the infrastructure to reduce reliance on ongoing managerial discretion and encode more of their economic policy directly into the system.

Our work spans advisory, design, and implementation for leading protocols including YieldBasis, Katana, and CoW Swap.

Automated Buybacks bring that experience together with our governance and execution infrastructure to help protocols design and implement buyback programs tailored to their protocol and token economics.
